This is a common question about car stereo systems, and many will tell you that indeed, the bigger the speaker, the bigger the sound. However, is that really true?

Many car owners will pack their car with huge speakers so that they can get the best sound quality out of the speakers. While some will simply swap out speakers for better ones the same size, like large tires, there is just something about huge speakers in a car.

If you don’t really care about how much room is available in your car, then the size of the speakers is entirely open to you. First of all, size does not always mean that you are going to have a louder sound. Do not be surprised if you find car speakers that are huge, but have the same amount of power as smaller versions. In this case, those speakers are a whole lot of bark, but not very much bite. The sad thing is, people will pay more thinking that they are getting an “amped” up version of the regular car speakers.

Large speakers from reputable brand names are very good though. They have excellent quality and they can provide better sound than you will find in smaller speakers. Most of the major brands will have huge speakers that do not sacrifice sound quality at all for the size.

However, does this answer the question of whether size matters? Well, to answer it simply, the answer is no. You can have some excellent speakers that are a quarter the size of bigger speakers and you will not have sacrificed anything, except the opportunity to waste your money on a large speaker. You also have to keep in mind that large speakers may not look good in a car, and actually may detract from people wanting to sit in it. You should never try and go huge if you don’t have to. Smaller speakers, especially four-way or five-way speakers will work perfectly fine for you. Couple that with a great amplifier and good subwoofer, and you have some excellent speakers that will do the job for you and more.

Forget about trying to go huge with your speakers. Save your money and spend it on some good smaller speakers with a good amplifier. That will get you noticed. Having huge speakers out the back of your trunk will not do much except give you a little bit louder sound, but at the sacrifice of sound quality.
